Uganda Police have announced additional arrests in connection with the death of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Pirates Rugby Club player Sydney Gongodyo, who died following an alleged mob attack on Friday, 5 June 2026.
According to police, five more suspects have been taken into custody, bringing the total number of individuals arrested in relation to the incident to eight as investigations continue.Gongodyo was reportedly attacked after being mistakenly accused of snatching a woman’s bag before later succumbing to injuries sustained during the assault.
In an official statement, police confirmed that the latest arrests form part of ongoing efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and hold all responsible parties accountable.
The suspects currently in custody have been identified as:
• Ssebagala Noordin
•Ayebazibwe Roden
• Namukose Juliet
•Mondoni Elly
• Twinomujuni Herbert
•Katsigazi Perigrino
•Tayebwa Darlious
•Tugume Hannington
Police further stated that operations remain underway to identify, trace, and apprehend additional individuals believed to have participated in the alleged mob killing.
Meanwhile, family, teammates, and the wider Ugandan sporting community continue to mourn Gongodyo’s passing. The fallen rugby star is scheduled to be laid to rest today in Sironko District.
His death has sparked renewed conversations around mob justice and the need for due process in handling criminal allegations.
