Uganda’s U-17 national team, the Uganda Cubs, made history by qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup after edging Ghana in a dramatic penalty shootout following a thrilling comeback draw in Morocco.
The high-stakes play-off encounter saw Ghana take the lead early in the game before Uganda responded through captain Owen Mukisa, whose brilliantly curled corner kick flew directly into the back of the net to level matters in the first half.

The West Africans restored their advantage shortly after the restart, piling pressure on the Cubs in a tense second half. However, Uganda once again showed resilience and determination, earning a penalty after a VAR review confirmed a foul inside the box. The Cubs made no mistake from the spot to force the contest into penalties.
During the shootout, both sides converted flawlessly until Uganda goalkeeper Ashraf Lukyamuzi emerged the hero with a crucial save that handed the Cubs the advantage. Travor Mubiru then stepped up calmly and converted the decisive penalty to spark wild celebrations and seal Uganda’s place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

The qualification marks Uganda’s second appearance at the global tournament, which will be hosted in Qatar for the second consecutive edition.
The Uganda Cubs are under the stewardship of Ghanaian tactician Laryea Kingston, assisted by Uganda Cranes legends Steven Bengo and Ibrahim Saddam Juma, who have guided the young side to a historic achievement for Ugandan football.
