Uganda Police have provided an update regarding the death of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Pirates Rugby Club player Sydney Gongodyo, who passed away on Friday after reportedly succumbing to injuries sustained during a mob attack.
According to a statement issued by police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, officers attached to Kira Road Police Station have arrested three suspects in connection with the incident that occurred on 5 June 2026.
The suspects have been identified as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, and Namukose Juliet.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Gongodyo was allegedly subjected to mob justice after members of the public accused him of snatching a woman’s handbag. Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing.
The death of the talented rugby player has sent shockwaves across Uganda’s sporting fraternity, with tributes continuing to pour in for the Rugby Cranes and Pirates Rugby Club star.
In honour of Sydney Gongodyo, the Uganda Rugby Union announced several measures to pay tribute to the fallen player.
The Uganda Rugby Premiership semifinal fixture between Platinum Credit Heathens and Stanbic Black Pirates, which had been scheduled for Sunday, 7 June 2026, has been postponed to a later date.
Additionally, a moment of silence was observed before all Uganda Rugby-sanctioned matches that took place on Saturday, while national team players and officials will wear black armbands in upcoming fixtures.
According to the burial programme, Sydney Gongodyo will be laid to rest on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, in Sironko District.
His passing marks a painful moment for Ugandan rugby as teammates, supporters and the wider sporting community continue to mourn one of the game’s dedicated figures.
